In recognition of her scientific
contributions to pharmacoepidemiology Dr. Patricia Tennis was recently inducted
as a Fellow in the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE). Dr.
Tennis has over 18 years experience conducting pharmacoepidemiologic research
at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Burroughs Wellcome and
Co. / Glaxo Wellcome / GlaxoSmithKline, and RTI Health Solutions. She has been
a member of ISPE since 1986, served on the Board of ISPE for three years, and
has published regularly in the area of pharmacoepidemiology, particularly on
quantifying the safety of medications in general clinical practice.
Dr. Tennis was instrumental in developing a program of pregnancy registries
for antiepileptic medications and other medications. She has participated in
FDA and CDC working groups that addressed the study of pharmaceutical exposures
during pregnancy.
Dr. Tennis currently leads the epidemiology group at RTI Health Solutions
and works closely with clients on retrospective and prospective studies, several
of which have international scope. Among other responsibilities, she is currently
the principal investigator for two claims-based studies quantifying the frequency
of selected medical events in patients receiving specific medications and a
project monitoring physician prescribing within the context of a risk management
program.
